The Best Beaches in Bonaire 1000 steps beach

1000 Steps Beach

Location: West Coast of Bonaire

This beach is straight out of the Wizard of Oz. It’s called the beach of 1000 steps because you have to take limestone stairs to get there (Don’t worry there are only maybe 60 steps). The beach itself has pristine white stand and the cove is surrounded by limestone cliffs.

1000 steps beach is know for it’s diving and snorkeling. The clear, turquoise water is shallow and you’ll find coral, sponges, fish and even turtles that you can swim right along side with.

Flamingo Beach

Location: Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, West Coast

Located at the amazing Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, Flamingo beach is a short walk from Bonaire’s main hub of Kralendik. It’s perfect for lounging with it’s pristine beach and lively pier.

It’s also a hot spot for diving and snorkeling as there are some amazing coral reefs and marine life. If you’re hungry or thirsty, you’ll find plenty of food and drink on the pier.

No Name Beach

Location: Klein Bonaire (take a water taxi from West Coast of Kraledijk)

Yes… the beach without a name. You’ll need to take a water taxi to the small, uninhabited islet, Klein Bonaire, but it’s well worth the trip. The white sand is absolutely pristine and the water is quite calm.

It’s a great place for a picnic or just lounging. It’s another great place for snorkeling as you’ll find a wide variety of fish and colorful coral.

Boka Kokolishi

Location: Washington Slagbaai National Park 

Another one of the unique beaches in Bonaire, it’s in between two volcanic rocks, Boka Kokolishi could easily be from Game of Thrones. Located at the Washington Slagbaai National Park, this is referred to as a black sand beach as it has a bit of a black hue because of the small pieces of black shells, left behind by water snails.

The limestone plateaus in the sea are regularly filled by a tide of seawater. The algae that grows on the plateus gives the water a a beautiful purple glow. This beach is not for swimming though as there are high waves and strong currents that can easily throw you into the rocks.

Sorobon Beach

Location: Kraledijk, East Coast

Sorobon is one of the best places in the world for wind sailing(It often hosts local and international competitions). It’s also great for lounging or taking a dip as it has calm and shallow waters as it’s protected by an offshore reef

Sorobon is also quite popular for fishing as you’ll see many boats around the nearby Fishermen’s Pier.

Te Amo Beach

Location: Kraledijk, East Coast

Popular with locals and tourists alike, Te Amo is a white sandy beach right near the airport. It’s great for sunbathing, swimming, or just having a nice BBQ. The diverse fish and beautiful coral, provide for great snorkeling. If you want to get out of the sun, the beach is surrounded by a good amount of trees providing shade.

If you’re hungry, the great Kite City food truck which serves an array of always fresh and delicious local cuisine.

There are a few nice cafes on the west coast of the island near most of the resorts. They serve a mix of Dutch, Caribbean, and international brands such as the delicious Illy coffee from Italy.


Bonaire Travel Tips

Best time to go: December through April is peak season when prices are higher and the island is a bit more crowded. You’ll find fewer crowds and bargain hotel rates between May and October.

Hurricane season: Bonaire doesn’t really have one, as it is located outside of the Caribbean hurricane zone.

Major Airport: (BON) Flamingo International Airport, also called Bonaire International Airport, is located near Kralendijk

Currency: (USD) The US Dollar is the official currency of Bonaire. (Euros and other foreign currencies are not be accepted.)

Electrical sockets: Most hotels and resorts have the standard US two-pin while some older buildings have European outlets. One thing to be aware of is as far as voltage, many plugs in Bonaire typically run 127 volt 50 Hz, compared to 120 volt 60 Hz in the USA, so you may need an adapter depending on your device.

Passport: You must hold a valid passport to enter Bonaire. Your passport must be valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of entry into Bonaire.

Best thing about Bonaire: The coral reefs. I go snorkeling or diving almost every day. We get divers from all over the world.
Favorite Local Cafe: Coffee Company which is in . They have really amazing coffee and ice cream. It’s a hot spot for tourists.
Cool Places to See: 1000 Steps Beach. Water is pretty shallow but there is a ton of wildlife. I love to swim with the turtles.
